Booze cruising is not new. For decades, UK travellers have been aware that there are great wine and beer bargains to be found across the water in France. Calais, Boulogne and Dieppe are so close to the south coast ports of Dover and Folkestone, that day trips to stock up on goods can be very easy and can save a lot of money. In addition, travellers returning to the UK from Cherbourg have the opportunity to stock up on wine and beer from some well known supermarkets.

But where do you find this cheap alcohol?

Like many day trippers, we used to visit a favourite hypermarket or two, rarely searching for new ones. While we saved a lot of money, we believed that we could save a good deal more by shopping around. This was very time consuming, so we searched for accurate, up to date and independent information and advice. Being unable to find what we wanted on the Internet, we researched the subject for ourselves, and we are happy to share this information with you. Calais in particular, really has so much to offer the booze cruiser or day-tripper, and we can help you find the bargains.

We travel to Calais regularly, visiting the hypermarkets and superstores, in order to keep our information up to date. We are in frequent contact with some of the outlets we list, but we remain fiercely independent, so you can be sure you are getting unbiased advice and information.

Why is it possible to save so much?

Duty Free is dead - long live Duty Paid! Limits have been abolished and replaced by customs guidelines. This has seen a great increase in the number of warehouses, hypermarkets and supermarkets dedicated to cheap wine and beer, springing up in and around the Channel ports, particularly Calais.

While many booze cruisers prefer to stock up on as much cheap beer and wine as possible, others relish the idea of being able to buy quality produce at a fraction of the UK price.

Either way, there is a good deal to recommend taking a ferry or the Channel Tunnel to the continent to stock up on cheap wine and beer. The tax differential remains high and that means that stocking up for parties, picnics, barbecues, Christmas or any occasion could save you a small fortune.
